November 2019 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac & Gluten Free Support Group had a terrific meeting In November. I am sure I can speak for all that were there, that we thoroughly enjoyed having member Britt Flores speak! In addition to being a fantastic dessert baker and local journalist, she had the courage to share with us her near death experiences and then only to find out she had Celiac Disease!  Please watch for her monthly column in the Prescott Courier (it may be twice a month, I'm not sure)
We also had a very lengthy discussion on "gut health" and the wonders of celery juice.  Britt gave us a great web-site for you to check out .........
Anthony William is the author who  has written several books on gut health and according to google has helped tens of thousands of people heal from many ailments misdiagnosed.   PLEASE READ DISCLAIMER AT THE BOTTOM OF PAGE.
The above led into an in depth discussion on SIBO  Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth.  According to our favorite local gastroenterolgist, SIBO goes "hand in hand" with Celiac Disease.  For folks that continue to have gut problems this is perhaps a test they should have done.  It is a breath test done with a special type of meter.  There is a term known as "Refractory Sprue" .. the definition being stubborn/ unmanageable or unresponsive to 6 months of a  strict gluten free diet. As of this meeting date, we have at least 3 members of our group that have been diagnosed with SIBO.

There will be NO TUESDAY MEETING IN DECEMBER.  If you come to the meeting in January, I will tell you the story of a North Carolina man that has a condition that brews alcohol in his own gut. He drinks no alcohol whatsoever  !!
There are 3 more seats left for our Christmas luncheon on Wednesday, December 11th. Please let me know.  Twenty is the maximum I can reserve for our group.
Thank you & Happy Thanksgiving!

September 2019 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support held a great meeting in September!  It was a roundtable (in this case square table) with everyone present having a chance to share a story, a discovery and opinion ! Thank you to all that came.

One item that came up was referring to an article I found in our local paper, The Courier. There is a Paulden based farm called Schaffer Farms. They are primarily selling a the Chino Valley Farmers Market.  However, they are hoping to start selling at the Prescott Farmers Market.  I bring this to your attention because in the article it says " Joseph Schaffer not only grows his own wheat, but also the other grains he cuts his wheat with and their main source of protein is their black beans grown at the base of their corn".

I find this troublesome for us and I wanted you to be aware "caveat emptor"

If you have always wanted to go to a Pampered Chef Party but was afraid of all the gluten food and cross contamination, I've got a great invite for you. Member Nicole is having a Gluten Free Pampered Chef Party on Sunday, September 22nd, at 2pm. Please RSVP to her directly at 928-910-2512.  She will give you details and directions. I'm looking forward to it.  I have used Pampered Chef for years, but since 2009, when I started my gluten free journey I haven't been to any. Nicole's kitchen is totally gluten free, with 2 celiac children, her mother and herself.

And one more plug...I don't use this forum for advertising as such, but since this is a need I think many of you could use, please indulge me.... as my husband can no longer do any " honey do's"...His & Hers Housekeeping and Maintenance is now available for those of you that can not, will not, or just plain don't want to do cleaning, house repairs, construction, plumbing, painting, rain gutter cleaning etc. etc. Please call Mel and Nicole Franetovich. My husband and I are now hiring Mel to help with chores that we either can't do or don't even have the tools to do it with. Their number is 928-910-2512.

There is no meeting in October.  See you in November.,

Renee and Linda

May 2019 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support group had a great turnout for the May meeting and welcomed two new members to the group.  Linda and I are always thrilled when a person gets diagnosed with celiac and then starts doing a google search and finds our support group.  Of course, it would be more ideal if the local doctors would give them our card or tell them there is an easier way to find us, but such as it is...

So, we covered a lot of ground and many stayed even after the meeting time to continue the conversations and to network.  One subject that was talked about at length was TOP 5 REASONS CHEAT DAYS ARE A NO-NO.  This was a great segway into Linda's in depth talk on continued gut damage. She will summarize her talk by email directly to all of you.  Suffice it to say, it is very important that gluten/wheat/barley/rye should not be ingested at any time voluntarily. If by accident you eat the above, we highly recommend consuming a gluten enzyme ( She & I use Enzymedica products). Any time Linda & I eat outside the home we take enzyme before, during and sometimes after we have eaten.  Again, as always, you choose to do this at your own discretion.

But getting back to the top 5 reasons.
1. You won't feel well.  2. You set off inflammation throughout the body. 3. You prolong gut recovery. 4 You will lose support (friends and family are less likely to support you if they see you cheating. 5. You could develop cancer.  Okay, this last item, per Gluten-Free Living magazine states that according to a 2013 study conducted at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, noncompliant celiac sufferers (cheaters) with unhealed small intestines have a higher risk of developing lymphoma (a type of blood cancer). This is according to Dr. Benjamin Lebwohl, MD, MS.

Member Sharon shared a incredible article in the Discover Magazine that determined that Celiac Disease can be traced back to suffering in Holland during WWII (1944-45) by a Dutch pediatrician, Willem-Karel Dicke.  I found this so fascinating, I will make copies available for the next meeting, so any of you can give a copy to your own doctor and yourself.

Thank you to many that donated to the "Free Will Donation" box.  Those monies are used for photocopies, business cards ( which are available to members) name tags, and misc.  This is a completely "pay it forward" by myself and Linda, with no dues or membership fees, so your donations are very appreciated.

On a lighter note.... I was at the Safeway in Prescott on Willow Lake Road/Miller Valley Rd and saw a huge collection of gluten free pizza!  Many I have not seen at Sprouts and with a price point of less than $10.00.  Spinato's of Tempe Arizona, Pizza Oggi, Sonoma Flatbreads, Open Nature, Mikey's and Freschetta to name a few.  We would love to hear from you out there, which Pizza's you think may be worth buying, including cauliflowers crusts, as well.

As far as restaurants, we are getting closer to organizing a list that is worthwhile.  Still, my favorite in Prescott is Farm Provisions (reuben sandwich to die for). I recently ate at Diablo Burger in Flagstaff (www.diabloburger.com) and my burger was on an artisan GF english muffins was delicious.  Fries are gluten free too.

Too much info this time to continue on, so til next time....

April 2019 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac & Gluten Free Support group had a very good interactive meeting in April and a lot of helpful information was shared.

The Gluten Free Watchdog has done several posts on the contamination of LENTILS and actual barley grains that are in the processed lentils themselves. You can read a few of her posts on the subject online without being a subscriber.

I know that every time I have purchased dried packaged lentils I have found between 3 and 8 barley grains in the package.
You MUST sort every package thoroughly for the grains and rinse in running water stirring, for at least 3 minutes to help with contamination of the lentils.

What really concerns me is there are soups on the market with lentils that are labeled Gluten Free, I am sure that the company has not taken the time to sort hundreds of
pounds of dried lentils to remove the barley? Also, there are gluten free crackers and baked goods that use lentil flour, the same question, are they sorting the barley out and rinsing the lentils before they grind the flour?

A medical Assistant in my dad's Dr.s office (she has Celiac) shared with me about a product called "IBEROGAST", to help with your gut and digestion process and it helps calm everything
down if you have been glutened. It has greatly helped her when she eats out and gets inadvertent gluten. One of our members said that Dr. Worthington recommend it to her and it seems to be helping. Iberogast was created in Germany 40 years ago and for the last 20 years Canada has been producing it under that name. It is only available online.

Another member told us about ALLERGINA Zone 6. it is available at Natural Grocers for $14.99.
She has allergies so severe she was in bed and nothing else seemed to help. She took some and within 15 to 20 minutes she felt much better. It is for seasonal allergies and is not related to gut health, but so many of us have multiple issues and the allergies are especially bad this year due to the heavy rains
that I thought that we could use extra the help.

One of our members, who is also allergic to corn, told us that corn and corn products have over 250 names. And that there is a facebook group called Corn Allergy and Intolerance Group for support for those that are allergic to corn.

May is National Celiac Awareness month, so look for specials at the health food stores.

Well that is it for now, we hope to see you in May,

Linda And Renee

February 2019 Meeting Summary

Whenever we have done a "round table" testimonial and discussion so much is learned and received on the varied journeys ours member have led living gluten free.  We find that once gluten has been identified as a disturbance to our well- being, other food items seem to make many, if not all, of us unwell.

One of the major discussions was about the situation with gluten free Thyroid medication.  Many of us have been taking Nature Throid because it  is gluten free. It is derived from pigs. I have taken NatureThroid for years.  Unfortunately, it was bought out by BIG PHARMA and is no longer available on the face of the earth. Rumor has it that all the pig farms were bought up by some person or corporation. Any of you out there that have any information on this, please email me.  Anyway, my doctor is putting me on WP Thyroid. Hopefully, I do not have any reactions.  Please be aware that most synthetic thyroid medication have gluten fillers in them. Caveat Emptor. Check out gluten-freedrugs.com   I will be emailing Steve Plogsted, a pharmacist in Columbus, Ohio, who is an expert on gluten in medications

Because February is also known as "heart healthy month" Linda had  terrific, if not terrifying information on the relationship between gluten and heart health.  Hopefully she will speak more on this at future meetings.  Suffice it to say that statistics about Gluten Intolerance show there is a much higher risk of heart disease and stroke in those that consume too much gluten.  Keeping in mind that 2 traditional slices of wheat bread has a higher sugar content than 6 tsp of sugar or a snickers bar.  For you all to verify and study this on your own, she recommends going to WellnessMama.com and search for the interview with Dr. Davis.  Dr. William Davis is a cardiologist who has written the highly successful Wheat Belly Book. He has a great cookbook called Wheat Belly Cookbook  with 150 recipes to Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight & Find Your Path Back to Health. It is also at the library for check out. Sugar is the major source of Inflammation and sugar causes arteries to narrow.

In my new Gluten-Free Living magazine (which is my personal subscription) there was an amazing article about gluten sniffing dogs!  There are at least 2 dogs in America that have been trained to sniff out gluten so as to protect their owners from eating gluten items.  One gal in the article trained her dog herself and the other person has a dog trained professionally.  Now this is something I would love to be able to do.  I love dogs ...we shall see what the future holds.

I have personally subscribe to the website Gluten Free Watchdog. Do any of you out there subscribe to this site???   Anyway, there is an overload of information, but I will send you bulletins that come to me in emails because I can just forward those easily.  I hope this is okay with you all.

November 2018 Meeting Summary

The November Prescott Area Celiac & Gluten Free support group meeting was full of information on gluten and moods, and also some little known symptoms of Gluten Intolerance.

Ingesting gluten to those who are Intolerant and have Celiac can have symptoms and that can be widespread in our bodies and have some surprising consequensenses.
Anger is one of those symptoms.
In an article from Gluten Free and More entitled Is "Gluten Intolerance Making Your Child Act Out", we read of one families' story of their 9 year old son and his anger problem.

Depression affects many with Gluten Intolerance, The Gluten Free Girl in her article titled, "On Why I Am So Happy Now" writes about her many years battling depression only to finally find out she had Celiac Disease.

Anxiety is talked about in Hypothyroid Mom's article "12 Shocking Symptoms of Gluten Sensitivity".

Schizophrenia is well documented in 2 articles. Dr. Mercola has a lengthy article titled,"60 Years of Research Links Gluten Grains to Schizophrenia".
Tragically the medical community has known about the link from gluten to schizophrenia for many years. People with Celiac/Gluten Intolerance are 2.13 times more likely to have Schizophrenia!
Why they don't share this information to the families of those patients is a tragedy and makes you wonder if the mental institutions would much less full if they did.
And what of the poor people who could lead normal lives if they were diagnosed, What a tragedy for them!
The Gluten Free society also has an article on "Schizophrenia and Celiac Disease Linked".
This is a sentence from that article, "As drugs are defined as- any chemical that changes the way we think, act, or feel, we should always consider food as having a potential drug like effect. One man's food is another man's poison."

From Suzy Cohen comes an article "Gluten's Impact on Your Mood and Skin and Why Acid Blockers Might Make it worse"
Suzy talks about how acid blockers actually hinder the complete digestion of our foods and how the can be responsible for bad moods because incompletely digested gluten can affect your neurotransmitters.
The neurotransmitters Serotonin and GABA ar more prevalent in your gastrointestinal tract than in your brain! If your gut lining is damaged due to  use of acid blockers or consumption of gluten,
then your brain chemicals are imbalanced, which can lead to depression and anxiety.

Neurological Diseases; From Wikipedia "The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)... is a control system that acts largely Unconsciously and regulates bodily functions such as the heart rate,
digestion, respiratory rate, pupullary response and urination.

An article "The Gluten Syndorme: A Neurological Disease", from the Children's Gastroenterology and Allergy Clinic, explains that gluten intolerance can manifest itself in may neurological diseases.
Being as gluten can affect your Autonomic Nervous System it can cause many problems.
Incontinence.  The Gluten Dude received an email from a mother wanting to know if anyone had ever heard of gluten causing bed wetting.
In 'Dear gluten Dude: My 13 Year Old Son Wets His Bed When He Eats Gluten, Is This Common"? one mom tells the story of her son and how ingesting gluten causes him to wet his bed,
and it happened when he spent the night at a friends house!

Sleep Apnea can be caused by gluten. If breathing is controlled by the autonomic system then our breathing when we sleep can be affected.
From a WebMD blog you can read "Are You Gluten Free and Sleep Free"?
Simple Sleep Services also has an article on it "Is There a Link Between Gluen and Sleep Apnea?

The above information is not intended to Depress you! But inform you that maybe one of the above conditions can explain some troubling symptoms you or your family have been having.
All of the above topics have many articles online that you can read. Just type in a diagnosis or symptom and the word gluten, what you may find may surprise you.

On our journey to health,
Linda Cook

August 2018 Meeting Summary

Thank you to all who attended the meeting, August 14th of the Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Supportorganization.  We covered a lot of information, only some of which I can concisely summarize.
Breanne Murcek, Territory Sales Manager, Vibrant America Clinical Lab was our guest speaker.  I can certainly tell you, she had a captured audience , that picked her brain endlessly.  I encourage any of you interested in more details than I can provide to check out www.vibrant-wellness.com. If you have specific questions for Bree her direct email address is BMurcek@Vibrant-America.com.  Currently, Innate Wellness & Medical Center (Dr. Gemie McLeod) at 820 Ainsworth Dr. Prescott can order the requested labs.  Breanne is investigating whether there is a local lab that we can self-refer.

One of the exciting tests Vibrant can provide is called WHEAT ZOOMER.  This is a comprehensive, sensitive and specific test to determine the spectrum of wheat and gluten related disorders. The WHEAT ZOOMER allows detection of protein antibodies associated with wheat and gluten sensitivities for information to reduce, monitor and manage the inflammatory effects of those sensitivities.  The cost is approx. $200.00.  Vibrant also has a specific sensitivity test for 96 foods that test for the IgA and IgG sensitivities. The cost is approx. 150.00  ( All prices are subject to change and are not specific for our support group)  The tests do not include the blood draw.  The WHEAT ZOOMER  also tests for "Leaky Gut Syndrome" (Intestinal Permeability).
If any of our members have had these tests and would like to share their opinions please email me.
I received a call from McKenzie, Manager of Frannie's Frozen Yogurt in downtown Prescott.  After one of our members inquired about the ingredient Maltodextrin in the their yogurt, McKenzie sought out the source of the maltodextrin and it is CORN.  She is educating her staff and hopes to have prepacked gluten free bakery items available soon.
Last week member Nicole and I had a table top display at the 63rd anniversary open house of Natural Grocers.  Thank you to all members that stopped by to support our group.  Our group is now considered a "community partner"  with Natural Grocers after Nutritional Coach , Vicky, spoke at our meeting in June. Vicky is arranging for a major event next year during National Celiac Month of May.
In good health!
Renee

July 2018 Meeting Summary

Note: The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support Group meets the second Tuesday of each month. Call Renee Richey @ (928) 443-0399 for info about meeting locations and times.

The Prescott Celiac and Gluten Free Support group had a terrific meeting this past week! The group hosted Melissa Ellis, Clinical Dietitian Supervisor and Cheryl, Nutrition Associate with Yavapai  Regional Medical Center (YRMC), as our guest speakers. Melissa spoke in depth on several aspects of Celiac and Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, that I got so caught up in, I didn't take very good notes...so my summary will be incomplete.  We hope to have both of them back as a community outreach from YRMC in the future.
One thing that struck me as significant was the fact that of the population that have Type 1 diabetes, at least 10% will have Celiac. And, we know that in the general population  1 out of 133 people have Celiac or Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity.  Melissa is also available for one on one consultation with a referral from either your doctor or your naturapath. If your insurance won't pay, it is $130.00 for an hour or so personal consultation.
Cheryl brought everyone samples of a delicious chia pudding (it can be made without ginger, FYI).  They brought recipes for the make-ahead pudding and an almond butter protein bite.  Melissa also spoke about eating OATS.....It is important for all of us to do our best to consume oats that follow the "purity protocol". Linda has found that GF HARVEST and MONTANA GLUTEN FREE are safe for us (both must be ordered online)  I eat GLUTENFREEDA and I buy hers at Sprouts.  As always...choose what works for you. These are only our suggestions.
We had two new members, Kathy and my dear friend Gerrit Jones. Each were able to give their personal testimonial on the journey to good health the gluten free way.
Thank you to all who came to the meeting. We missed those of you who could not attend.  Our meetings are always the second Tuesday of the month.  Next month we have Brea from VIBRANT LABS coming from Phoenix to speak. We had a record turnout the last time she attended our meeting.  So please put August 14th on your calendar.
In good health!

April 2018 Meeting Summary

Welcome to the Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support Blogsite! The meetings are held monthly on the second tuesday of each month. Please contact Renee Richey @ (928) 443-0399 for meeting times and locations.

At the April 10th meeting the group had a homemade pizza demonstration.
Tammy Kastanas and Linda Cook showed how to make two diferent homemade gluten free, vegan pizza crusts. It was alot of fun and there were plenty of delicious pizzas with a variety of toppings to sample.

Tammy's pizza crust recipe is available from her new cook book, "That's It, Gluten-Free Dairy-Free High Altitude Baking, with Vegan options". Linda's recipe is available from Petite Allergy Treats.
Below is link you can cut and paste in your web browser.

The link below is for a great video short on how important our gut microflora is and what happens when is out of balance. I has a great point about eating prebiotics to feed the good bacteria in our gut.

Hope to see you at the group's next meeting on May 8th, we will be having a bring your own lunch and desserts to share potluck.

On our journey to health,
Linda C.

March 2018 Meeting Summary

The meeting on March 13th was full of information. The meeting was held at its usual location in the Rose Room of the Brandshaw Senior Community on Bradshaw Drive in Prescott, from 12-2PM, on the second tuesday of each month.

The group discussed the difference between Celiac, Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, and Wheat Allergy.

Also discussed were tips to help recover from being accidentally "Glutened", and how to recover from the physical and emotional pain. "Glutened" is when you are eating out and you have ingested gluten with your meal, even though you were very careful ordering and the restaurant assured you that your meal was gluten free!

Some of the tips were:

Gluten Ease every time you eat out.

A diet consisting of only fruits and veggtables and broths for that day and the following day to allow you body to heal, coconut water for electrolytes, ginger to settle the stomach and help with inflamation.

Tumeric which is a powerful antiinflammatory, white willow bark (which is the natural form of asprin) or asprin for inflamation and pain.

Charcoal pills tho help bind up and usher out the gluten and excess gas in the gut, it also helps diarrhea.

For digestion- Gluten ease before bed that day and the next morning, licorice root tea or DGL, Carrot juice (both for acid reflux as well as stomach soother)  L glutamine powder for gut healing.

A heating pad for GI cramping.

Digestive enzymes, extra probiotics, Allermax or Breath X for allergy type symptoms, Rest, Rest, Rest.

Dr. Tom Obrien, ( who is called the Celiac Dr.) of the Dr.com has the best information on gluten digesting enzymes we have seen. He sells a product called Glutenza wich is top of the line for breaking down accidental gluten, and tells how it keeps the very long protien chain from doing so much harm to our bodies. Look up his infographic on "How Glutenza pulverizes gluten" on his website under the Glutenza product.

See you in April!

Linda C.

November 2017 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support group had a record turnout at its November meeting and there was so much interesting information shared, I have a bit of "sensory overload".
Thank you so much to Linda Cook, Tammy Kastanas, and the 2 Brothers Crafting presentation.  To those of you that brought new product packaging to share and to the many of you that donated to our "free will donation cash box", Linda & I say a big thanks!
Linda shared samples and info on 2 items.  www.carlsonlabs.com   & www.montanglutenfree.com
Why are Carlson Fish Oils Important: !. Cardiovascular health 2.Brain & Nerve Health  3. Vision health 4. Immune system health 5. Joint health 6. Skin health.  Out of the many fish oil supplements Linda has tried herself, Carlson Fish Oils are the one & only that have not upset her gut by either fish odor or stomach issues.  Due to space I have not gone into details on all the above points. Please go to their web site.  I will say however, Linda was able to obtain their top of the line fish oil supplement samples for those at the meeting. Thanks so very much.
She also has been searching for oats that she and the rest of us could eat without "allergic" type repercussion.  Sensitivity to oats can manifest as a result of allergy to oat seed storage proteins either inhaled or ingested. AVENIN, the glutenous protein in oats is similar to the gluten found in wheat, therefore you may not have been able to eat oats too.  Please check out the Montana Gluten Free website.  It is so informative on their oat selection process and sample pack are available on their website.
Long time member Tammy Kastanas of "That's It !, catering and baking company was at the meeting promoting new cookbook. "That's It ! Gluten-Free Dairy-Free High Altitude Baking"  Approx $16.00.  She will have them for sale at The Honeyman store in Prescott  or contact her at trkastanas@yahoo.com.
The craft presentation was delightful.  Young David and Isaiah sold chapstick, lavender calming bags, brown sugar lip scrubs, bubble makers and terrific doggy paw balms, and many other cute items.  For information contact:  david2isaiah@yahoo.com
And lastly, I will be forwarding a followup email from the Canadian Celiac Association.  We have a member in our group from Canada and Brenda has just informed us that General Mills in Canada will no longer have a gluten free label on their cereals. And you all know why. Hopefully, the USA will follow suit.
Our next meeting will be a Christmas party on December 12th.  More info to follow at a later date.

August 2017 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac & Gluten Free Support Group had a very good turnout for its July meeting.  The Gluten Free & Allergy Free Expo was discussed...the pros and cons on attending.  The next one in Arizona will be June of next year.  After meeting the director, Jen, of the Expo, it seems as though they get a great room rental rate in the summer (duh!) so, she plans on continuing having the event that month.  This year it was not nearly as crowded and rather than having the speakers in hallway break out rooms, all the speakers were in the same great exhibition hall.  I thought it was more convenient that way, in fact.
Next month, we would like to have discussion on 2 key items........where would you or a love one go to live, when it's time to live in a retirement community or a care facility that can and will accommodate Celiac and gluten free dietary needs????  Are there any facilities available to our community?
Second, What is your protocol or remedy if you become "glutenized" by cross contamination or accidentally ingesting gluten????
I will have your complimentary, newest issue of the magazine, "Gluten Free & More".  This magazine hits the racks this month and retails for $7.99 to the general public.  First come, first served on the distribution of the magazine at the August 8thmeeting.  I have a designated number of magazines the publisher sends me.
See you next month.

January 2017 Meeting Summary

We had a fantastic meeting on January 10th at our new meeting location in the Rose Room at
                                                    The Bradshaws Senior Community
                                                    133 Bradshaw Drive in Prescott
The meetings are always held on the second tuesday of each month from 12-2PM.

We had a great discussion on prebiotics and probiotics and how most, if not all of us have leaky gut syndrome or "gut permeability" even if our doctors haven't address this issue.  Sauerkraut is an anti-inflammatory food and packed with benefits. Besides having probiotics to offer, sauerkraut is a good source of antioxidants and dietary fiber too, thanks to its main ingredient cabbage. A great website on sauerkraut/cabbage can be found at https://healthimpactnews.com  discussing how this fermented food can restore gut flora.  Right now at Costco you can find the WILDBRINE brand of raw organic sauerkraut for $7.99 a 50 ounce jar.  It is located near the sausages in the refrigerated section.  It is also sold at Sprouts in a much smaller jar for approx $5.00.  Start out with a tablespoon or two a day, if you haven't had sauerkraut in a while.
AND......For those of you that have been waiting for a reasonable price on Celiac DNA Testing ..... it is now available for only $99.00 Vibrant Wellness located in San Carlos, California www.vibrantwellness.com . The representative that is working with our group is Breanne Murcek. If you are interested.... text or call her at 402-968-1200.  The test is done by cheek swab, so the lab will send the swabs directly to you.
I mention the above, because I became gluten free after over 10 years of sickness undiagnosed by any doctor in this town.  It was only after going to my chiropractor that I even remotely considered gluten as the culprit.  I am going to do DNA test.

January 2016 Additional Meeting Notes

At our last meeting on the 10th of January we discussed how Bob's Red Mill has changed their policy concerning Gluten free manufacturing of their foods marketed to us the Celiac & Gluten Intolerant community. I have been in contact with their Customer service as has Renee and here are some preliminary answers.

It was a total shock to me to find out that Bob's is no longer testing to 5ppm as in the past, and I found that out after having a full Ceilac reaction 3 times over the holidays to their supposedly GF oat flour. The Customer rep told me that they test to 20ppm and that the oat flour was not manufactured in their plant but in Canada. Supposedly on GF equipment but we don't know if the oats were grown under the puirty protocol or if they are using mechanically seperated oats. You will remember this discussion because of the Cheerios contamination and Renee's contact with GF Harvest about thier GF oats in Powell, Wyoming. Bob's sent an envelope and I mailed back the oat flour so they could test it to see if there was cross contamination.

In the past you could go to Bob's website and see a picture of their GF mill and factory. And they proudly stated that they test down to 5ppm using the Elisa method which is the
strictest method used for GF foods. Now their whole GF page has changed and they no longer even mention what PPM they are testing to. Here is a copy of the letter Renee recieved in answer to her email questioning their GF testing policies.

"Hi Renee,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Products. For over 30 years, Bob’s Red Mill has been committed to providing the very best in Gluten Free flours, cereals, baking mixes and grains for our friends on gluten free diets. For all of our gluten free products, we thoroughly batch test every product in our quality control laboratory upon delivery, during production and after packaging. We adhere to a standard of no more than 19 parts per million of gluten.  Should a test show that a product exceeds that limit, it would be simply rejected and made unavailable for distribution to anyone. Every step in the production of our gluten free products is done in a separate gluten free packaging division complete with specialized machinery to make sure that our products maintain their purity.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions and have a wonderful day."

Sounds good but it also sounds like they may be bringing in products that may be over 19ppm and once they are produced if they test above that then they are taken out of distribution?

I sent Bob's a lengthy Q and A letter asking questions such as are all products now packaged and manufactured on the same lines as the 19ppm products.
Example, rice flour made from rice grown in a strict GF process should test at or below 5ppm.
I have not heard back from Bob's and as soon as I do I will send their answers out to you.

So sadly my friends it seems that we can no longer trust Bob's Red Mill to have our health and best interests at heart as they did previously. As for my self I am NOT using Bob's products until I hear from them.

I have heard many times "I am not that sensitive so I don't have to worry about it."
Here is something to think about, We are all here in our GF group and on our journey because our declining health forced us to stop and figure out why we were constantly sick and had
possibly numerous health issues. Meaning, that there has already been some dammage to our bodies and we are now having to deal with that damage, for most of us over the course of many years.
So, If we continue to eat 20ppm on a daily basis and at every meal from contaminated foods we are continuing to damage our bodies and will possibly pay for it with another mystery health issue or diagnosis. If I make a batch of cookies and eat 3 or 4 per day then I am getting gluten contamination every single time I eat them. It is hard enough to manage the restaurants, supposedly making GF foods for us and the possible ensuing illness we will suffer, without bringing it into our homes to eat every day.

As we have said before, the food manufacturing companies and the FDA wouldn't tell a peanut allergic child or person to "go ahead and eat a cookie with 20ppm peanut contamination,
a little anaphylaxis won't hurt you!" Neither can our bodies process ANY gluten, is like poison to our bodies.

So, how about some good news?
Hallelujah for Hodgson Mills GF products and company dedicated to us G-Freers and our health and safety!

Hodgson Mills has for many years been manufacturing safe Gluten free products. Their son is a celiac. I found them at Fry's when our first family member was diagnosed 12 years ago.
I have had an extensive talk with their customer service and I am so amazed at the lengths they go to for the Gluten Free foods they manufacture.
Some of the safety precautions they use are:
They have a separate air cleaner to make sure that no outside contamination comes into the building, They use shoe scrubbers and I think she said they wear suits.
They test to 5ppM and all GF products are made in a seperate dedicated GF area on dedicated lines. They are certified by the Celiac Support Association.
They are a small family owned company, and as a bonus thier corn products are non- GMO!
Cheryl, whom I spoke to at customer service was very nice and understanding and willing to help us in any way she could. She stated that they have been getting calls from consumers with similar stories about Bob's.
I am going to get a letter in writing of all of their policies and safety procedures manufacturing GF products and I'll forward it when i can.
In summary I am going to purchase their products from now on because of their dedication to us and our health and safety.

Another bonus! Now through January 24th shipping is FREE at Hodgson Mill on all orders over $40.00!
There are a limited number of their products at Walmart, I haven't looked recently at Fry's. Their cornbread mix is an award winner and is very delicious, even egg free.
They are also available at Amazon. Walmart has some great prices on Hodgson's products, cake mixes that aren't 3 or 4 times what you would pay for betty crocker.

I would like to see us request that Sprouts, Fry's and Walmart carry more of their products.
We should support the companies that go the extra mile for us. Vote with your dollars!

Also I have been in contact with Namaste foods and they say they also test their products to 5ppm. I have not sent them a letter but they have called and stated that they very much wanted to work with us in any way they can. I will forward their info when i receive it.
If you haven't tried Namaste's Spice cake mix it is delicious! I have made the carrot cake recipe and used canned pumpkin to make delicious muffins. All the health food stores carry Namaste foods and flours and mixes.

Renee has also been in contact with Pamela's Gluten free company and here is their reply.

"Good Afternoon Renee -

We appreciate your interest in Pamela's Products.  It is only through relationships with our customers that Pamela’s is able to celebrate 28 years in the natural food industry! Pamela’s passion has always been to create a food experience that will establish lasting memories for our customers!
I would tell you exactly what the FAQ says:
The new FDA regulation for standardizing gluten-free claims and labeling on products addresses a serious issue for many of our customers. At Pamela’s, we are pleased to see there are now some standards in place to help those with celiac disease and gluten intolerance make educated decisions regarding their food choices. We are happy to say that we provide gluten-free products already in compliance with new FDA requirements and have been doing so for over 28 years. While the ruling requires gluten-free labeled products must test at 20ppm or less for gluten, Pamela’s products consistently test at under 5ppm or less.
On a side note, we do not receive complaints of cross contamination.

I hope this is helpful & please do not hesitate to let us know if we can be of further assistance.
Have a great day!"

Once again we want to state that the choice is yours, we cannot tell you what is right for you, we are only here to pass on information that we receive.

On our journey to health,

Linda and Renee
