September 2018 Meeting Summary

After 3 meeting months with speakers, it was a real joy to get together and share thoughts, testimonials and delicious "pot luck" goodies. Many folks brought their lunch and snacks/desserts to share.  The 2 Brothers Crafting brought their famous pesticide/preservative free hand/body lotion to sell and it was a big hit.  They are both celiac and are home schooled and their entrepreneur spirit is very motivating.
Recent member Gerrit shares a very delicious vegetable broth that he has been consuming to better his health.  A cancer survivor, his testimonial was very moving as he discovered success in a gluten free/dairy free/ sugar free lifestyle.  Thanks so much for joining our group and sharing your journey.  Having no success with local doctors, Gerrit found on line a company that will do self-referred blood testing through local labs here in Prescott.  Check this out yourself, if it applies to you.  LIFE EXTENSION, NATIONAL DIAGNOSTIC, 5990 N Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33308  lifeextension.com. You must put blood testing or something similar in their search engine, as they also sell supplements, magazines etc.  Or call 866-962-4701.  This is his personal recommendation and NOT AN ENDORSEMENT BY OUR SUPPORT GROUP.
Thanks to everyone that brought desserts to share.  A hit was the home made cookies by Nicole and 2 Brothers Crafting.  Find the recipe at http://allnewrecipescooking.blogspot.com  Type in the search box  rice flour jam cookies.
And finally, we had a lively discussion on the benefits of A2 Milk.  If you have been unable to consume milk without gastric disasters please go to your computer search engine and just type in a2milk.  There is a plethora of information.  Check out the 2minute video on YouTube by Dr. Eric Berg, DC. It is very concise and easy to understand.  Also, check out https://a2milk.com.au/about-us/milk-nutrition.  In general, milks from Guernseys, Jersey, humans, sheep, goat, camel etc contain the A2 Beta Casein.
I received a request from a member that would like to know if any of you out there in email-land know a doctor in town, familiar with Lymphocytic Colitis.  If so, please email me and I will pass the info on.  I am not able to do this type of personal request for specific medical conditions regularly. However, I am making an exception at this time.
See you all in October.
Renee

August 2017 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac & Gluten Free Support Group had a very good turnout for its July meeting.  The Gluten Free & Allergy Free Expo was discussed...the pros and cons on attending.  The next one in Arizona will be June of next year.  After meeting the director, Jen, of the Expo, it seems as though they get a great room rental rate in the summer (duh!) so, she plans on continuing having the event that month.  This year it was not nearly as crowded and rather than having the speakers in hallway break out rooms, all the speakers were in the same great exhibition hall.  I thought it was more convenient that way, in fact.
Next month, we would like to have discussion on 2 key items........where would you or a love one go to live, when it's time to live in a retirement community or a care facility that can and will accommodate Celiac and gluten free dietary needs????  Are there any facilities available to our community?
Second, What is your protocol or remedy if you become "glutenized" by cross contamination or accidentally ingesting gluten????
I will have your complimentary, newest issue of the magazine, "Gluten Free & More".  This magazine hits the racks this month and retails for $7.99 to the general public.  First come, first served on the distribution of the magazine at the August 8thmeeting.  I have a designated number of magazines the publisher sends me.
See you next month.

August 2015 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support Group wrapped up the summer months of 2015 with its' tuesday, August 11th meeting from 12-2PM at Prescott Valley Public Library. The group discussed favorite cook books and welcomed three new people to the meeting, which was held on the third floor in the Crystal Room.

The Yavapai County Public Library system has well over 100 titles on Celiac and the Gluten Free Lifestyle, with the majority being cookbooks. The group also discussed the myth of an all purpose gluten free flour. Just as there are different wheat flours for cooking and baking, all purpose, self rising, bread flour and cake flour, there are different gluten free flour blends for different baking needs. Some flour mixes lend themselves to making a pastry or cake best because of their high starch to protein ratio. And some flours lend themselves best for a bread flour, because breads need a higher ratio of protein to a smaller amount of starch.

It is best to pick a commercial flour mix and use the recipes online from that company for that particular flour mix or make your own homemade, which is generally a considerable savings. Companies that offer GF flour mixes have factored in how much liquid and other ingredients are needed to make that recipe a success. If you used a high protein flour blend to make cakes it would not have enough liquid and would end up very dense.

Also the group discussed that lemon juice, instead of using vinegar in a recipe, would yield in a lighter baked good. The lemon juice's chemical reaction to baking soda can be as much as twice the amount of a rise than vinegar. This is especially important if one must cook egg free.

Gimbal's company makes an entire line of gluten free jelly beans, as well as the black licorice Scottie Dogs, made with real licorice root and pure anise. The Prescott area Tractor Supply store was selling the bags 2 for $5.00. One group attendee said she had paid as high as $5.00 per bag before.

Dr. Tom O'Brien recently offered a segment online about gluten in green tea! Whether the gluten was found in the bag or the tea itself was not clear, but studies have proven that there were detectable levels of gluten in several samples.

The next meeting of the Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support will be Tuesday, September 8th at the Prescott Valley Public Library from 12-2PM. We look forward to seeing you there!

March 2015 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support group met at Prescott Public Library on tuesday, March 17th, 2015, from 12-2PM.

The group discussed Breyers Ice Cream. Breyers now has 30 gluten free flavors as denoted by the green gluten free label on the side of the carton next the nutrition info. They are easy to read as they give the pictures of the cartons on their website.

The group also discussed a new product called "Gluten Cutter" that Linda C. had seen advertised in a drug store ad. The label says: "Eat gluten without the bloat". The website supposedly has a test to determine: "How sensitive to gluten are you?"!

Linda C. commented that she feels like GF awareness is going backwards in a way. Will other people start saying, "Why can't you just take one of those pills to cut gluten and eat it anyway?" Will the world just see this the same as lactose intolerance and consume gluten all the while damaging their bodies and immune systems?

We have come so far in diagnosis and recognition of Celiac and non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity. Linda feels that this attitude may be moving things in the wrong direction. http://glutencutter.com/

(See below for Linda's entire presentation from the meeting...)

Our immune system comes from several places in our bodies but, more than 70% in our gut!
As Hypocrates said more than 2000 years ago, “All disease begins in the gut”.

"I have been reading a book by Dr. Susan Blum MD called, “The Immune System Recovery Plan”. Susan is a leading authority on the immune system and autoimmune diseases, and a functional medicine Dr. She says, “Functional medicine first looks at the gut when it comes to any chronic disease”. Much like during Hypocrites’ time, except we have testing tools that basically spell out what disorders we have. Dr. Blum healed herself from Hashimotos Thyroiditis with the protocol she outlines in her book.

She clearly spells out what your immune system does and what causes autoimmune disease. She says, “Antibodies are molecules normally made by your immune cells to attack and destroy foreign invaders, but in autoimmune diseases, these antibodies are misdirected and attack and damage your own tissue. Many of these conditions are chronic, debilitating, and potentially life-threatening. In fact, autoimmune diseases are one of the top ten leading causes of death in girls and in women up to sixty-four years of age.

She says, “the immune system in your gut is faced with the task of clearing out the bad agents while keeping what your body requires to stay nourished and healthy. It also has the job of repairing any damage caused by these foreign substances and any reactions they’ve caused in your body, such as inflammation or infection.”

She lists the potential triggers of Autoimmune disease as: Gluten, Chronic Stress, Hormone Imbalance, Imbalance of good bacteria in your gut, Food allergies, Toxins and infections. Many of you remember the talk I gave last year on food allergies and testing. In chapter 2, Dr. Blum tells us that you must make sure you get the right tests. She states that most Allergy specialists will only test for the IGE allergic reactions. Positive IgE tests are only for hives, swelling of the tongue, or difficulty breathing. But, the other kind of allergy testing involves IgG antibodies, which play a role in causing immune-complex disease. This is when the food gets into your bloodstream and your immune system makes antibodies that attach to the food, making something called an antigen-antibody complex. It can settle out into your tissues and cause local inflammation and damage, which then results in an even bigger immune attack to this inflamed tissue. Your joints are very susceptible to deposits of immune complexes, and this is believed to be one of the Main mechanisms behind the development of rheumatoid arthritis.
Because evidence suggests that all people with autoimmune diseases have leaky gut syndrome, it is likely you are having immune reactions to the food you eat.

On the topic of,  balance of good bacteria, I was stunned to learn in an e-summit on gut health that we are only 10% human and the rest is bacteria! For a Healthy Immune system, your body is dependent on a good relationship with the beneficial bacteria that live in your digestive tract.

Dr. Blum states that we are fighting germs by sterilizing our environment too much, which has caused us to lose our good gut bacteria.
Several years ago I went to a meeting where the Arizona Department of water quality stated that they are now finding Triclosan in our drinking water!!! Triclosan is the most popular chemical that is in our antibacterial hand soaps. This was probably 8 to 10 years ago, imagine how much of the toxic stuff is in our water now! Think about this when you go to wash your hands in a public bathroom, how much dangerous chemicals are you washing down the drain. Some studies have shown that it takes at least 20 minutes for the chemicals to kill some of the bacteria.

What do we do anyway, rub it on our hands and immediately wash it down the drain, where the only bacteria it is killing is the good bacteria in our guts, when the water gets recycled and put back into our drinking water supply! What did our ancestors do to wash their hands; they had lye soap that they made from all natural ingredients. And they used plenty of clear water to clean up. I myself just wash with water for 2 choruses of “Happy Birthday to you.”

In a side note of interest, in the Living Without magazine a couple of years ago in an article on food allergies in children, when they were tested they found that the kids who had the most food allergies had the highest levels of Triclosan in their blood! Anytime you see “antibacterial” on any household product, beware of Triclosan.

Now, I realize that we have a lot more dangerous and potentially fatal germs than our ancestors did, but what does the hospital use to kill germs? Mostly alcohol as in the rubbing or 70% kind! Alcohol is much more earth friendly than toxic chemicals and it kills most germs on contact. My family and I buy the baby wipes from Costco in bulk and I put ¼ cup of alcohol into the bags when I open it. I store it in the car and when I come out of a store I wipe my hands with an alcohol wipe EVERY TIME I come back to my car. Don’t forget your steering wheel and all levers and buttons you touch in your car once in a while.

Auto Immune diseases affect 24 million Americans with many names such as; Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, MS, IBD or Colitis, diabetes, hypothyroidism, Hashimotos Thyroiditis, and psoriasis to name a few. There are more than 100 autoimmune diseases, and they can affect our bodies at almost every level. If you have Celiac you have an auto immune condition. Chances are that you either have or will have in the future another autoimmune condition on top of your celiac.

This book is really unique in that on page 24 she tells you the step by step actions to discover if you have an autoimmune disease and then if those tests come back positive she has charts that list the symptoms of each disease like lupus or Hashimotos. Then according to which disease you have the most symptoms of, you can then be tested for that specific disease. A much more cost effective and timely way to go about finding what is ailing you!

To make sure you have a healthy immune system, our bodies are dependent on a good relationship with the beneficial bacteria that live in your digestive tract. Many of you remember a couple of months ago I talked about the Probiotic I take called Colon Care from Garden of Life, I have felt so much better since taking it. I have less allergy symptoms, more regularity, and better digestion even in my stomach. Dr. Tom says those with gluten intolerance should take a probiotic and also prebiotics every day.

We need to make sure we replenish the good bacteria in our gut that gets depleted from antibacterials in our water, to antibiotics in our meat and milk, to antibiotics we take for illness and the many chemicals we are exposed to in our world every day. Dr. Blum also has a Healing Your Gut Workbook in this book, along with lots of recipes and also what foods to eat and which ones not to eat.   With her protocol you can eat to heal and reset your immune system.

I highly recommend this book and really respect Dr. Blum when she says she wrote this book because there is only one of her and so many of us. She is giving us insider information for free, ( her secrets if you will) so we can be healed from our autoimmunity like she was.

I also would like to give you a website to watch a revolutionary video that changed the way I look at food, and also makes me not feel quite so deprived when I can’t eat most foods. It is called “FAT, SICK, AND NEARLY DEAD”, the website is: rebootwithjoe.com/watch-fat-sick-and-nearly-dead.

January 2015 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support organization met for its' first meeting of 2015 on tuesday, January 20th.  The meeting was well-attended.  Many group members had attended the GF & AF Expo in Glendale, Arizona on January 17th.  Those that did attend the event were able to learn about many new GF products in the marketplace, taste samples and come away with a big bag of complimentary goodies.  And some vendors even sold their dry goods at a very reduced price.

At the expo this year there were several lectures and informative speakers scheduled throughout the day of the event.  One lecture that Renee R. attended was about "GF Belly Blasters". The speaker was a very dynamic woman from Canada named Kathy Smart. She was not only very educated but very entertaining. Check out her website www.livethesmartway.com. Kathy discussed the need to stop weighing yourself and to focus on eating to build muscle.  She also mentioned being wary of all the gluten free packaged/processed foods, because their nutritional value is not always in the best interest of the health of those who are on a gluten free diet. Kathy suggested focusing on what she refers to as "super foods" such as  kale & green veggies; chia or ground flax; coconut oil; fish oil; salmon; hemp seeds and protein.

One additional take away from Smart's lecture is that if you have had a medical diagnosis of Celiac that is concrete.  She was diagnosed when she was 12 years old. However, if you didn't have any tests done, did not have an informed physician and chose to go gluten free on your own and YOU FEEL BETTER, move on and don't worry that you did not have "tests performed on you".  As Dr. Tom O'Bryan often quotes: " You cannot be a little pregnant, and you cannot have just a little gluten". Once you know you feel better eliminating gluten from your diet; don't eat it!

It was really great to hear again from members about how their lives have been changed by going gluten free and  sharing the journeys of those that have been Celiac for over 20 years and those that have been recently diagnosed.

The next meeting of the Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support organization will be held on Tuesday, February 17th from 12-2PM at Prescott Public Library's Founder's Room A on the lower level.

August 2014 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support Group experienced excellent attendance for the August meeting on Tuesday the 19th at the Prescott Public Library.  Several new members joined in as a result of the article that ran in the Prescott Courier on June 1st about celiac disease and gluten sensitivities.

Discussion at this month's meeting included information about the new FDA law in regard to gluten free labeling that was passed in August 2013. Compliance officially started in August 2014.

Members attending the August meeting were made aware of the three main national Celiac organizations: CDF/CSA/GIG. The cost to belong to these national organizations is the primary reason the Prescott Area Group will remain local and not affiliated with a national group.  Renee R. did encourage those in attendance to check out the Phoenix support group: phoenixceliac.org.

There was much discussion about new products available at Costco (i.e., Wild Rice Crackers and Luke's GF crackers) and  also at other local grocery stores. Note: Diane J has added that VitaCost.com carries several GF products that are not available at any of the stores/retail outlets in our community. Examples are: Van's Crackers, Orgran GF toasted buckwheat crisp breads (perfect with lox and cream cheese), plus Majan's "Bhuja" snacks cracker mix, and another item now at Natural Grocers: Jovial's Tagliatelle, or traditional flat noodle egg pasta...pricey, but a real time saver vs. making your own... and great for Fall and Winter chicken soups and stews.

As usual, during the meeting each individual was given an opportunity to share their gluten free journey.

Linda C. and Renee R. mentioned eating at Wildflower Bread Company and meeting the manager, Karrigan George.  Although it is not a gluten free restaurant, they ate safely after reading their gluten free menu online.  This info was also shared at the meeting. They indicated that their lunch was delicious.

Everyone in attendance received a copy of Living Without's current issue of Gluten Free & More, compliments of the publisher.

And lastly, don't forget Tammy Kastanas and her "That's It! Gluten Free Home Bakery". Tammy is at the Farmer's Market @ Yavapai College Saturday mornings from 7:30AM til noon. She has wonderful GF bakery items and also provides catering.

The next meeting will be held once again at the Prescott Public Library Founder's Room "A" downstairs, on Tuesday, September 16th at 12:00PM.

January 2014 Meeting Summary

Happy Gluten Free New Year!

Bailey Rose Warstler, is a licensed acupuncturist in Prescott and also a regular attendee of the local gluten free support group. She was the group's guest speaker/presenter at the meeting at Prescott Public Library on 1/21/14.

Many members present had tried acupuncture for various issues with various results. Bailey said this typical of all health treatments. Bailey tried and now treats herself with acupuncture for a serious muscle cramp syndrome that is extremely painful and debilitating. She went to many traditional doctors and more than a dozen surgeries without much relief.

She was studying physical therapy in Chicago when someone suggested she try acupuncture. She did and experienced "great success"!  She decided then to study the therapy and become a licensed practitioner of this ancient Eastern Medical Art.

Schooling is a three to four year, full time Master's program covering Traditional Western and Ancient and Modern Eastern Holistic methods and theory. Acupuncture is thousands of years old, probably originated in China, and is practiced in Korea, Japan and all over the Far East.

Today's method uses extremely fine needles of varying lengths and thicknesses to tap into the Qi (Chi) or the body's own energy force, at any one of four hundred points along the main meridians as plotted by the ancient Chinese.  Acupressure is similar and uses much the same points. The idea is to remove blockages at various points to allow the Qi (life force) to flow freely and achieve balance in the body, making the patient feel better.  The Qi can be unbalanced by stress, diet, environment, injury/illness/ and lifestyle changes. Bleeding is rare, but in some cases, intentional, and only a drop may be all that is needed to relieve pressure.

When diagnosing a patient prior to treatment, Bailey will take the pulses at three different places and levels on both wrists. She will look at the patient's tongue, which to the trained eye, reveals a great deal about the health of the body. All treatments are tailored to the individual, and as symptoms change, so will the treatment, which is progressive. One then can go to maintenance visits less frequently. Bailey has had great success treating Fibromyalgia.

Initial visits cost $80.00 and involve many questions so Bailey can get to "know" you and what is happening in her client's life, in order to tailor treatment specifically to your health issues.  Follow up visits are $60.00 and are all inclusive. Insurance coverage varies, so check with health coverage policy. Both Linda C. and Renee R are patients of Bailey, and report an overall relaxing sense of well-being after treatment.

One member offered this advice; "Don't be afraid"... to try acupuncture!

Extra note from meeting: Renee R's recommendation for a good allergy test company is: The Intolerance Testing Group; www.allergytest.com. This company tests for food, nutrients, metals via hair samples.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at next month's meeting on Tuesday, February 18th, 2014 at 12:30 PM, in the Founder's Room "B" on the lower level of Prescott Public Library.

March 2013 Meeting Summary

Well, it seems that Spring has sprung a little early this year, but we are sure that there are at least a couple of snow storms still pending before May!

Tuesday, March 19th was the Prescott Area Celiac & Gluten Free Support group's "Gluten Free & Green" themed meeting for a warm Spring day and also for St. Pat's Day. (Actually, two days late on St. Pat's!)

Everyone brought a little snack that was gluten free and green, so that meant more than likely HEALTHIER options! Twelve folks attended the meeting, with about half of that number new comers. Many had been to Tammy's cooking demo event at Natural Grocer's store saturday and had found out about the monthly support meetings. Welcome again to Pam, as well as newcomers Peggy, Janice, Marie, Sharon and Kay.

The group sampled quinoa humus, spinach-artichoke tapenade, kale chips, fresh asparagus, and guacamole. Yum!  Discussion was about the recent gluten free cooking event at Natural Grocers, (Go, Tammy!) various food allergies, the difference between gluten allergies and gluten intolerance (celiac), the special needs of a newly diagnosed celiac, and ideas for upcoming meetings.

The group indicated interest in learning more about the nutritional needs of those with gluten sensitivities and celiac disease. The group also indicated a strong interest in the May meeting being focused on a discussion of substitutions for various foods that those in the group may be allergic or sensitive to.

The April meeting of the PACGF support group will be held at Prescott Public Library on April 16th, 12:30PM. Hope to see you there!

October 2012 Meeting Summary

The October meeting of Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support was held at the Founder's Room "B" of the Prescott Public Library on October 16th at 12:30 PM.

The meeting was attended by nearly 20, including four new comers. (Welcome everyone!) The guest presenters for October's meeting were Julia and Mike Lersch, from Julia's Gluten Free Bakery in Paradise Valley, AZ. Cupcakes and wonderful cinnamon rolls were enjoyed by most of the group and the Lersch's shared information about their company and about where their products are available in the area. Since all the area Fry's stores, with the exception of the store on Willow Creek Rd, are carrying their products, it was suggested that perhaps the group should petition the store's bakery manager to persuade them to carry Julia's Bakery items. The group enjoyed extra time to visit and network during the sampling of Julia's products.

A comprehensive Gluten Free References list was created and shared by Linda C. Each member also participated in a short questionnaire about what they would like to see taking place with the group in regard to future meeting topics, and so forth.

Diane J announced the completion of her second cookbook (The Farmer's Daughter Cooks Gluten Free) and made a few books available for the group to look over or purchase at a special reduced rate.

Next meeting is November 20th at 12:30 PM at the Prescott Public Library Founder's Room "B". Since the meeting is just a few days before Thanksgiving, Diane J will present information on "Gluten Free Hints for the Holidays" and will bring samples of GF baked goods, such as her walnut herb bread and cranberry-orange scones... and maybe some surprises!.

Hope to see you then!

September 2012 Meeting Summary

Renee speaking to the group about exchanging contact information
September meeting was held on 9/18/12 at 12:30PM at the Prescott Public Library Founders room "B" on the lower level.

Renee R. handed out a few of the PACGFS calling cards, and new and current members of the group briefly shared something about themselves and about their gluten free journey.

Group members are being encouraged to use the blog to gain updates about the group and to also feel free to leave comments in the comment sections of the blog.

New information was given about upcoming presenters who are scheduled throughout the remainder of the year.

October: Julia's Bakery representatives from the  Phoenix area.
November: Gluten free baking hints with Diane J., who has written two GF cookbooks: The Farmer's Daughter Cooks Gluten Free and Delicious! The Very Best of Gluten Free and Wheat Free Cooking.
December: Shea with GMO Free Prescott will speak to the group about genetically modified foods, such as corn, wheat, soy, and sugar beets. Also at the December meeting, different product samples that have been sent to the group from Canyon Bakehouse in Littleton, Colorado will be shared with the group.

A restaurant review panel that consisted of Roberta W., Linda C. and Diane J. shared with the group about their respective experiences at our local Prescott Station, El Gato Azul, and Red Robin restaurants. Many in the group found the information very helpful in navigating the sometimes treacherous waters of dining gluten free at restaurants. Most of the feedback was positive and the group agreed that GF dining in restaurants has improved significantly over recent years. A portion of the feedback from the reviewers will be communicated with the restaurants as a useful tool in educating and hopefully improving their gluten free offerings.

The next meeting of PACGFS is scheduled for tuesday, October 16th at 12:30PM at Prescott Public Library's Founders Room "B".

August 2012 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support group held its August meeting/luncheon yesterday at Prescott Public Library's Founder's room, "B". The meeting was well-attended, with approximately 20 in attendance. Welcome to our newcomers!

While the group grazed on an assortment of snack foods and special gluten free (and sometimes yeast free, casein and dairy free) options, several topics were discussed. The group was informed about the new blog site, so that folks can begin checking the blog for updates and current info about the group. A calling card has been created with the group's logo that can be handed out to others in the community who may be interested in coming to the group. There will be more printed cards available at the next meeting, or they can be printed out for each group member's own use.

Information was shared with those in attendance about several gluten free products that are now available in our community. Costco is currently carrying "Go Picnic", a fabulous gluten free option for an on-the-go snack or for travel. The new Natural Grocers store was mentioned in regard to several new GF options that are now available there, such as Canyon Bakehouse breads, which many were in agreement as being the best GF bread currently available in the market place. Natural Grocers has extended an invitation to the group for a tour of its store and its gluten free offerings.

There was discussion about a recent AP Prescott Courier article (August 12th) in the Sunday Vitality section about the increasing prevalence of those who are desiring to eat gluten free. The article also mentioned information about GMO (genetically modified organisms) in wheat.

There was an in depth discussion about celiac DNA testing and an informative sharing of up-to-date information about this topic by Linda Cook.

Next meeting is 9/18 at 12:30 PM with topic to be announced.

Suggestions for topics
1. GF diet supplementation
2. Reviews of favorite restaurants with GF offerings
3. GF food storage tips
4. Info on adding fiber to your diet
5. Traveling tips for GF diets
6. Bringing in a local gastroenterologist physician to speak to the group

Please let us know your thoughts on these topics.

You can leave comments at this blog site.

Thanks so much!

The Prescott Station restaurant on 200 E. Gurley is generating some positive feedback within the local gluten free community. A non GF friend visited there shortly after it opened and was thrilled to report back to us that the management was not only very aware of the special needs of someone who is required to dine gluten free, but that they also offer a listing of GF options.

August 9th, 2012  Diane J. visited this restaurant with a friend for a birthday lunch. The waitress was pleasant, attentive, and well-versed in the gluten free menu offerings. Ordered a fish taco with corn tortillas and sides of beans and rice. Very good, though side dishes were excessively salty. Overall dining experience was excellent. The atmosphere and restaurant decor is the best I have experienced in this area in quite some time.

April 2013. A group member had a very negative experience with fish tacos that were served with both flour and corn tortillas, even after GF requests were specified.

November 21st, 2012
Several people in the group have mentioned very positive experiences that they had had recently with restaurants that are offering gluten free dining options. These included Nick and Willie's Pizza, Wildflower Bread Company, Prescott Station, and Gurley Street Grill. Also, the El Gato Azul owner, Barry, has recently notified the group that the restaurant is now carrying gluten free bread and GF tortillas as well.

July 2012 Meeting Summary

Today was the July 2012 PACGFS final meeting in the Prescott Public Library's Elsea room on the main floor. The group nearly met the room's capacity, topping out at approximately 14. PACGF support is looking forward to meeting on August 21st at12:30 PM on the lower level of the library at the Founders Room "B", which accommodates 45 people. The Founder's Room also provides a serving area and sink, which would be great for bringing in samples of gluten free food items for meetings.

The majority of the meeting was designated for members to meet everyone and to learn a little more about new members, while sharing needs and hearing what folks would like to obtain from the group. Suggestions for future topics of interest were shared and discussed.

It was suggested that at the August meeting gluten free foods would be brought in to snack on, which would work especially well because of the time of day that meetings are held! So, the group's first gluten free "potluck" will be held at the August meeting. Another suggestion would be for a speaker, possibly either a CNC (certified nutritional counselor) or an MD or natureopath to be invited to speak to the group about supplements and nutritional support for an individual with celiac disease or someone who is required to or desiring to eat gluten free.

Looking forward to seeing you then!

Chef Bryan's Bistro, 436 Goodwin St. Several in the group have been making VERY positive comments about this relatively new restaurant. Chef Bryan is very accommodating and will make special gluten free adaptations to your meal. He also seems to have a good knowledge about celiac disease and about the special requirements for gluten free dining without cross contamination. But, as always, dine at your own risk!
