January 2020 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac & Gluten Free Support group first meeting of the year was fantastic.  Many times the meetings are filled with so much information, it is a bit of sensory overload.  This was one of those.

Linda started off with insightful information of the continuing issue of "cross contamination" She has found a terrific website that would serve us all well to follow.  In addition to the cross contamination issue, some of us are still suffering from  molecular mimicry also referred to as cross- reactive.  These are foods that have similar proteins and/or other molecular similarity and our bodies think it is wheat or could be another food product that our bodies have developed sensitivities to.  Unfortunately, the Gluten Intolerance Group ( GIG) and the Gluten Free Watchdog group have determined that trace gluten is found in many or all foods,  (ie: processed foods, not whole foods) Please refer to this  web site Linda recommends https://www.verywellfit.com/gluten-ppm-table-562483

I have been encouraged for some time now to create a Facebook Page for our group.  As of this time only email members have been emailed the link.  However, over the years I have had newly diagnosed Celiac people contact me from out of the area and out of state and they are interested in our group and learning how to navigate the gluten free lifestyle.  Although I have been on Facebook personally for years, please be patient with me, because I need to learn how to "manage" a  designated Facebook Group Page.  Also, I would like to thank members Nicole Franetovich for setting up the page, and Diane Jacobs for her logo idea.

Again, thanks to Nicole for turning us all on to a delightful Mexican Restaurant that does and can accommodate our gluten free meals. Spicy Streats, Mexican Street Food located at 1201 Iron Springs Rd, Prescott.  Open Mon-Sat 10am- 7pm and Sunday 10am- 6pm.  You must say when ordering that you are Celiac ( that's the term they readily recognize) and you can additionally say  "no flour" and can you please change your gloves?  Ivan is the owner and most of his family work there...Several of us ate there after the meeting and it was delicious. They have a large enough room that could accommodate 20 of us, so we may plan a luncheon there sometime in the future.

On another important note. Dr. Mark Worthington, Gastroenterologist is leaving the YRMC Gastro Office in Prescott. He is not leaving the area, however.  Supposedly, those of us who are patients of his will get a letter advising as such. I have not received any letter and I have been a patient of his for many years. Again, thanks Nicole, for the heads up.  Although, I know where he is going, I feel it premature to announce it to you all, because I don't have it in writing from him.

Our next meeting will be February 11th.

Linda also gave us all more information on the designation on safe gluten free foods.... and that is the designation "approved by the Celiac Sprue Association". You can find it on  the box of the gluten free FRESCHETTA frozen pizza.  This continues to be a reliable identifier of safe gluten free processed food.

June 2019 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support Group had a terrific meeting last week with speaker Dr Karissa Walton, N.M.D.  Naturopathic Physician with INNATE Wellness & Medical Center, 820 Ainsworth Dr., Prescott 928-776-1600

Dr Karissa specializes in treating chronic pain and neurological issues. Of course, she can treat any one of us with all our gluten and food issues.  As she states.. statistically 1 out of 130 have celiac, 1 out of 60 have gluten sensitivity and 1 out of 7 have wheat disorders. And, sadly many of the population do not know "what's ailing them".  She spoke quite a bit about "gluten ataxia" and in fact there have actually been diagnosed Parkinson's patients that really have gluten ataxia. Ataxia symptoms may vary but can include: trouble using fingers, hands, arms and/or legs..trouble speaking...trouble moving eyes...poor coordination and/or balance...tingling in extremities...gait problems...and damage to the cerebellum (the part of the brain that controls coordination.

It would be impossible for me to summarize the extent of her knowledge imparted to us that day.  Subjects that were covered  were  thyroid, thyroid, thyroid. Oh, my gosh so much info.  Intestinal Permeability/Leaky Gut Syndrome and the issues with absorption, which becomes the problem because inflammation prohibits the absorption.

Many of us have heard these subjects discussed before.  However, having a physician explain in more detail was invaluable (and a bit overwhelming)

Dr. Karissa is new to the area & Dr. Gemmie's office and is offering  new patient/new doctor pricing.  Most, if not all, naturopathic practices are "cash pay". I encourage you to call ASAP if you are interested in booking an appointment.  Tell Savannah/front office that you are with the Celiac Group and that you were told there was a new patient/new doctor price.  My appointment is on Thursday and I am so looking forward to talking to Dr. Karissa one on one.

(Please read and be aware of the bottom of this page, where our disclaimer is available.  Thank you.  Also, if you no longer wish to receive our groups emails and periodic Gluten Free Watchdog updates, please email me back and I will remove your name immediately.)

Thank you everyone that is interested in our journey to good health.

May 2019 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support group had a great turnout for the May meeting and welcomed two new members to the group.  Linda and I are always thrilled when a person gets diagnosed with celiac and then starts doing a google search and finds our support group.  Of course, it would be more ideal if the local doctors would give them our card or tell them there is an easier way to find us, but such as it is...

So, we covered a lot of ground and many stayed even after the meeting time to continue the conversations and to network.  One subject that was talked about at length was TOP 5 REASONS CHEAT DAYS ARE A NO-NO.  This was a great segway into Linda's in depth talk on continued gut damage. She will summarize her talk by email directly to all of you.  Suffice it to say, it is very important that gluten/wheat/barley/rye should not be ingested at any time voluntarily. If by accident you eat the above, we highly recommend consuming a gluten enzyme ( She & I use Enzymedica products). Any time Linda & I eat outside the home we take enzyme before, during and sometimes after we have eaten.  Again, as always, you choose to do this at your own discretion.

But getting back to the top 5 reasons.
1. You won't feel well.  2. You set off inflammation throughout the body. 3. You prolong gut recovery. 4 You will lose support (friends and family are less likely to support you if they see you cheating. 5. You could develop cancer.  Okay, this last item, per Gluten-Free Living magazine states that according to a 2013 study conducted at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, noncompliant celiac sufferers (cheaters) with unhealed small intestines have a higher risk of developing lymphoma (a type of blood cancer). This is according to Dr. Benjamin Lebwohl, MD, MS.

Member Sharon shared a incredible article in the Discover Magazine that determined that Celiac Disease can be traced back to suffering in Holland during WWII (1944-45) by a Dutch pediatrician, Willem-Karel Dicke.  I found this so fascinating, I will make copies available for the next meeting, so any of you can give a copy to your own doctor and yourself.

Thank you to many that donated to the "Free Will Donation" box.  Those monies are used for photocopies, business cards ( which are available to members) name tags, and misc.  This is a completely "pay it forward" by myself and Linda, with no dues or membership fees, so your donations are very appreciated.

On a lighter note.... I was at the Safeway in Prescott on Willow Lake Road/Miller Valley Rd and saw a huge collection of gluten free pizza!  Many I have not seen at Sprouts and with a price point of less than $10.00.  Spinato's of Tempe Arizona, Pizza Oggi, Sonoma Flatbreads, Open Nature, Mikey's and Freschetta to name a few.  We would love to hear from you out there, which Pizza's you think may be worth buying, including cauliflowers crusts, as well.

As far as restaurants, we are getting closer to organizing a list that is worthwhile.  Still, my favorite in Prescott is Farm Provisions (reuben sandwich to die for). I recently ate at Diablo Burger in Flagstaff (www.diabloburger.com) and my burger was on an artisan GF english muffins was delicious.  Fries are gluten free too.

Too much info this time to continue on, so til next time....

October 2018 Meeting Summary

Thanks to all of you that came to yesterday's meeting of the local Prescott Celiac and Gluten Free Support Group.  We really enjoyed having Mike and Britt Flores of Peace, Love Baking Company as our guests.

Britt shared her horrendous journey of near death in the hospital until doctors told she was Celiac Disease. Then of course she started on her personal journey of wellness eating gluten free. Mike and Britt and their two children are all gluten free and have a completely gluten free kitchen.

Theirs is a "cottage" bakery in their home and they make a wide array of gluten free products.  They brought chocolate chip cookies and blueberry muffins and banana muffins for every one to enjoy.  They are taking a break from the Farmers Market at this time. Please check out their web site www.peacelovebakingco.com  They can do bridal showers, wedding cakes, parties etc. You can them email at plbakingco@gmail.com or call them at 626-390-9402

Diane (our blog master) would like to update our blog with current restaurants that you folks have found accommodating our gluten free needs.  Members at the meeting shared some of the restaurants and yours might be the same. So please email me your suggestions.

See you at the next meeting  November 13th.

September 2018 Meeting Summary

After 3 meeting months with speakers, it was a real joy to get together and share thoughts, testimonials and delicious "pot luck" goodies. Many folks brought their lunch and snacks/desserts to share.  The 2 Brothers Crafting brought their famous pesticide/preservative free hand/body lotion to sell and it was a big hit.  They are both celiac and are home schooled and their entrepreneur spirit is very motivating.
Recent member Gerrit shares a very delicious vegetable broth that he has been consuming to better his health.  A cancer survivor, his testimonial was very moving as he discovered success in a gluten free/dairy free/ sugar free lifestyle.  Thanks so much for joining our group and sharing your journey.  Having no success with local doctors, Gerrit found on line a company that will do self-referred blood testing through local labs here in Prescott.  Check this out yourself, if it applies to you.  LIFE EXTENSION, NATIONAL DIAGNOSTIC, 5990 N Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33308  lifeextension.com. You must put blood testing or something similar in their search engine, as they also sell supplements, magazines etc.  Or call 866-962-4701.  This is his personal recommendation and NOT AN ENDORSEMENT BY OUR SUPPORT GROUP.
Thanks to everyone that brought desserts to share.  A hit was the home made cookies by Nicole and 2 Brothers Crafting.  Find the recipe at http://allnewrecipescooking.blogspot.com  Type in the search box  rice flour jam cookies.
And finally, we had a lively discussion on the benefits of A2 Milk.  If you have been unable to consume milk without gastric disasters please go to your computer search engine and just type in a2milk.  There is a plethora of information.  Check out the 2minute video on YouTube by Dr. Eric Berg, DC. It is very concise and easy to understand.  Also, check out https://a2milk.com.au/about-us/milk-nutrition.  In general, milks from Guernseys, Jersey, humans, sheep, goat, camel etc contain the A2 Beta Casein.
I received a request from a member that would like to know if any of you out there in email-land know a doctor in town, familiar with Lymphocytic Colitis.  If so, please email me and I will pass the info on.  I am not able to do this type of personal request for specific medical conditions regularly. However, I am making an exception at this time.
See you all in October.

August 2018 Meeting Summary

Thank you to all who attended the meeting, August 14th of the Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Supportorganization.  We covered a lot of information, only some of which I can concisely summarize.
Breanne Murcek, Territory Sales Manager, Vibrant America Clinical Lab was our guest speaker.  I can certainly tell you, she had a captured audience , that picked her brain endlessly.  I encourage any of you interested in more details than I can provide to check out www.vibrant-wellness.com. If you have specific questions for Bree her direct email address is BMurcek@Vibrant-America.com.  Currently, Innate Wellness & Medical Center (Dr. Gemie McLeod) at 820 Ainsworth Dr. Prescott can order the requested labs.  Breanne is investigating whether there is a local lab that we can self-refer.

One of the exciting tests Vibrant can provide is called WHEAT ZOOMER.  This is a comprehensive, sensitive and specific test to determine the spectrum of wheat and gluten related disorders. The WHEAT ZOOMER allows detection of protein antibodies associated with wheat and gluten sensitivities for information to reduce, monitor and manage the inflammatory effects of those sensitivities.  The cost is approx. $200.00.  Vibrant also has a specific sensitivity test for 96 foods that test for the IgA and IgG sensitivities. The cost is approx. 150.00  ( All prices are subject to change and are not specific for our support group)  The tests do not include the blood draw.  The WHEAT ZOOMER  also tests for "Leaky Gut Syndrome" (Intestinal Permeability).
If any of our members have had these tests and would like to share their opinions please email me.
I received a call from McKenzie, Manager of Frannie's Frozen Yogurt in downtown Prescott.  After one of our members inquired about the ingredient Maltodextrin in the their yogurt, McKenzie sought out the source of the maltodextrin and it is CORN.  She is educating her staff and hopes to have prepacked gluten free bakery items available soon.
Last week member Nicole and I had a table top display at the 63rd anniversary open house of Natural Grocers.  Thank you to all members that stopped by to support our group.  Our group is now considered a "community partner"  with Natural Grocers after Nutritional Coach , Vicky, spoke at our meeting in June. Vicky is arranging for a major event next year during National Celiac Month of May.
In good health!

March 2018 Meeting Summary

The meeting on March 13th was full of information. The meeting was held at its usual location in the Rose Room of the Brandshaw Senior Community on Bradshaw Drive in Prescott, from 12-2PM, on the second tuesday of each month.

The group discussed the difference between Celiac, Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, and Wheat Allergy.

Also discussed were tips to help recover from being accidentally "Glutened", and how to recover from the physical and emotional pain. "Glutened" is when you are eating out and you have ingested gluten with your meal, even though you were very careful ordering and the restaurant assured you that your meal was gluten free!

Some of the tips were:

Gluten Ease every time you eat out.

A diet consisting of only fruits and veggtables and broths for that day and the following day to allow you body to heal, coconut water for electrolytes, ginger to settle the stomach and help with inflamation.

Tumeric which is a powerful antiinflammatory, white willow bark (which is the natural form of asprin) or asprin for inflamation and pain.

Charcoal pills tho help bind up and usher out the gluten and excess gas in the gut, it also helps diarrhea.

For digestion- Gluten ease before bed that day and the next morning, licorice root tea or DGL, Carrot juice (both for acid reflux as well as stomach soother)  L glutamine powder for gut healing.

A heating pad for GI cramping.

Digestive enzymes, extra probiotics, Allermax or Breath X for allergy type symptoms, Rest, Rest, Rest.

Dr. Tom Obrien, ( who is called the Celiac Dr.) of the Dr.com has the best information on gluten digesting enzymes we have seen. He sells a product called Glutenza wich is top of the line for breaking down accidental gluten, and tells how it keeps the very long protien chain from doing so much harm to our bodies. Look up his infographic on "How Glutenza pulverizes gluten" on his website under the Glutenza product.

See you in April!

On our journey to health,

Linda C.

 Happy New Year Everyone!

Thank you to all that came to yesterday's meeting.  We covered a lot of items and it was a fun meeting.  Unfortunately I am not always able to relay all that is discussed in the followup summery, but I try my best.

The GLUTEN FREE LIVING magazine that I personally subscribe, gave a terrific "year -in -review" of all events pertinent to living the gluten free lifestyle....with highlights such as new products from Canyon Bakehouse;  Chick-fil-A, Starbucks & Jersey Mike's Subs offering more gluten -free options; Enjoy Life Foods updating and adding more product choices to name a few.  I have extra copies of this year in a glance if you can come to next month's meeting.  It is in the January/February 2018 issue of Gluten-Free Living.

Member Becky Renfroe brought her tried and true favorite Fruity Bar recipe and also recommended the GO RAW watermelon seed product.

Linda was a wealth of information as usual  (thank-you Linda).  She gave a very informative presentation on getting, gaining and keeping good intestinal health. She is a strong proponent of KYO-DOPHILUS, Digestion & Immune Health capsules. Used to promote healthy intestinal function (restore, balance & protect).

And, she brought her new home brew of WATER KEFIR........Water kefir is a powerful source of the highest concentration of "good bacteria & beneficial yeast known to man". Water kefir beverage supplies you with a daily lifetime supply of 40+ strains for the rebuilding of your colon flora that's been damaged by leaky gut syndrome or just plain old fast food!

She will be sending you a direct email from her, but suffice it to say, if you google "water kefir instructions"  you can get a heads up on what she will be sending you about water kefir.

Linda also advised us that YRMC (the hospital) now has gluten free options available.  Hopefully, none of you has to go to the hospital, but at least you will be able to order gluten free now.

Check out www.everlywell.com  This company was featured on Shark Tank and was invested in by one of the Sharks.  Everlywell does many kinds of medical testing without doctor referral.  For $199.00 they will test sensitivity to 96 food types.  I have not used them myself.  Just passing on the info.

Again, please read the disclaimer at the bottom of the page.

See ya February.  I am working on getting a great speaker.  Stay tuned.

March 2017 Meeting Summary

For our March Prescott Area Celiac & Gluten Free Support group meeting we shared some of the books the group has been reading pertaining to our GF lifestyle.

Some of the books mentioned were:

Digestive Wellness                                       by Elizabeth Lipski
Eat Dirt                                                         by Dr. Josh Axe
Gluten Free Edge                                        by Peter Bronski
The New Glucose Revolution                      by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller
Brain Food                                                  by Dr David Perlmutter

--and some funny ones-
In Memory of Bread, a Memoir                  by Paul Graham
Gluten is my Bitch                                     by April Peveteaux

We were also sent some generous samples of pancake mix and travel packets of flax from Hodgson Mill along with several brochures about eating GF and some recipes, and some $1.00 Coupons from Jackson's Honest, potato chips cooked in a dedicated gluten free facility and with coconut oil.

Also GF Harvest sent some samples of their breakfast GoPack oats, and some cups of instant Canyon oats flavored breakfast oats. GF Harvest is a purity protocol oats company, whose oats test well below 10ppm.
We learned from GF Harvest how samples of non purity protocol oats are averaged and some of the oat samples that are used in supposedly gf oats are well above the 20ppm allowed by the FDA. Some of the samples can
be at 92ppm and up. You can see a sample of the testing and averaging of samples on the GF Harvest website.
Also some of the dishonest oat companies are buying oats from GF Harvest and when an inspector comes to sample oats the company leads them to the ones purchased from GF Harvest because their oats will always test at 10ppm! One of the founders of GF Harvest oats said that UDI's uses their purity Protocol oats in their granola.

Overall it was a very informative meeting.

January 2017 Meeting Summary

We had a fantastic meeting on January 10th at our new meeting location in the Rose Room at
                                                    The Bradshaws Senior Community
                                                    133 Bradshaw Drive in Prescott
The meetings are always held on the second tuesday of each month from 12-2PM.

We had a great discussion on prebiotics and probiotics and how most, if not all of us have leaky gut syndrome or "gut permeability" even if our doctors haven't address this issue.  Sauerkraut is an anti-inflammatory food and packed with benefits. Besides having probiotics to offer, sauerkraut is a good source of antioxidants and dietary fiber too, thanks to its main ingredient cabbage. A great website on sauerkraut/cabbage can be found at https://healthimpactnews.com  discussing how this fermented food can restore gut flora.  Right now at Costco you can find the WILDBRINE brand of raw organic sauerkraut for $7.99 a 50 ounce jar.  It is located near the sausages in the refrigerated section.  It is also sold at Sprouts in a much smaller jar for approx $5.00.  Start out with a tablespoon or two a day, if you haven't had sauerkraut in a while.
AND......For those of you that have been waiting for a reasonable price on Celiac DNA Testing ..... it is now available for only $99.00 Vibrant Wellness located in San Carlos, California www.vibrantwellness.com . The representative that is working with our group is Breanne Murcek. If you are interested.... text or call her at 402-968-1200.  The test is done by cheek swab, so the lab will send the swabs directly to you.
I mention the above, because I became gluten free after over 10 years of sickness undiagnosed by any doctor in this town.  It was only after going to my chiropractor that I even remotely considered gluten as the culprit.  I am going to do DNA test.

January 2016 Additional Meeting Notes

At our last meeting on the 10th of January we discussed how Bob's Red Mill has changed their policy concerning Gluten free manufacturing of their foods marketed to us the Celiac & Gluten Intolerant community. I have been in contact with their Customer service as has Renee and here are some preliminary answers.

It was a total shock to me to find out that Bob's is no longer testing to 5ppm as in the past, and I found that out after having a full Ceilac reaction 3 times over the holidays to their supposedly GF oat flour. The Customer rep told me that they test to 20ppm and that the oat flour was not manufactured in their plant but in Canada. Supposedly on GF equipment but we don't know if the oats were grown under the puirty protocol or if they are using mechanically seperated oats. You will remember this discussion because of the Cheerios contamination and Renee's contact with GF Harvest about thier GF oats in Powell, Wyoming. Bob's sent an envelope and I mailed back the oat flour so they could test it to see if there was cross contamination.

In the past you could go to Bob's website and see a picture of their GF mill and factory. And they proudly stated that they test down to 5ppm using the Elisa method which is the
strictest method used for GF foods. Now their whole GF page has changed and they no longer even mention what PPM they are testing to. Here is a copy of the letter Renee recieved in answer to her email questioning their GF testing policies.

"Hi Renee,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Products. For over 30 years, Bob’s Red Mill has been committed to providing the very best in Gluten Free flours, cereals, baking mixes and grains for our friends on gluten free diets. For all of our gluten free products, we thoroughly batch test every product in our quality control laboratory upon delivery, during production and after packaging. We adhere to a standard of no more than 19 parts per million of gluten.  Should a test show that a product exceeds that limit, it would be simply rejected and made unavailable for distribution to anyone. Every step in the production of our gluten free products is done in a separate gluten free packaging division complete with specialized machinery to make sure that our products maintain their purity.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions and have a wonderful day."

Katterrina Ross
Customer Service Department
Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods, Inc.
13521 S.E. Pheasant Court
Milwaukie, Oregon 97222

Sounds good but it also sounds like they may be bringing in products that may be over 19ppm and once they are produced if they test above that then they are taken out of distribution?

I sent Bob's a lengthy Q and A letter asking questions such as are all products now packaged and manufactured on the same lines as the 19ppm products.
Example, rice flour made from rice grown in a strict GF process should test at or below 5ppm.
I have not heard back from Bob's and as soon as I do I will send their answers out to you.

So sadly my friends it seems that we can no longer trust Bob's Red Mill to have our health and best interests at heart as they did previously. As for my self I am NOT using Bob's products until I hear from them.

I have heard many times "I am not that sensitive so I don't have to worry about it."
Here is something to think about, We are all here in our GF group and on our journey because our declining health forced us to stop and figure out why we were constantly sick and had
possibly numerous health issues. Meaning, that there has already been some dammage to our bodies and we are now having to deal with that damage, for most of us over the course of many years.
So, If we continue to eat 20ppm on a daily basis and at every meal from contaminated foods we are continuing to damage our bodies and will possibly pay for it with another mystery health issue or diagnosis. If I make a batch of cookies and eat 3 or 4 per day then I am getting gluten contamination every single time I eat them. It is hard enough to manage the restaurants, supposedly making GF foods for us and the possible ensuing illness we will suffer, without bringing it into our homes to eat every day.

As we have said before, the food manufacturing companies and the FDA wouldn't tell a peanut allergic child or person to "go ahead and eat a cookie with 20ppm peanut contamination,
a little anaphylaxis won't hurt you!" Neither can our bodies process ANY gluten, is like poison to our bodies.

So, how about some good news?
Hallelujah for Hodgson Mills GF products and company dedicated to us G-Freers and our health and safety!

Hodgson Mills has for many years been manufacturing safe Gluten free products. Their son is a celiac. I found them at Fry's when our first family member was diagnosed 12 years ago.
I have had an extensive talk with their customer service and I am so amazed at the lengths they go to for the Gluten Free foods they manufacture.
Some of the safety precautions they use are:
They have a separate air cleaner to make sure that no outside contamination comes into the building, They use shoe scrubbers and I think she said they wear suits.
They test to 5ppM and all GF products are made in a seperate dedicated GF area on dedicated lines. They are certified by the Celiac Support Association.
They are a small family owned company, and as a bonus thier corn products are non- GMO!
Cheryl, whom I spoke to at customer service was very nice and understanding and willing to help us in any way she could. She stated that they have been getting calls from consumers with similar stories about Bob's.
I am going to get a letter in writing of all of their policies and safety procedures manufacturing GF products and I'll forward it when i can.
In summary I am going to purchase their products from now on because of their dedication to us and our health and safety.

Another bonus! Now through January 24th shipping is FREE at Hodgson Mill on all orders over $40.00!
There are a limited number of their products at Walmart, I haven't looked recently at Fry's. Their cornbread mix is an award winner and is very delicious, even egg free.
They are also available at Amazon. Walmart has some great prices on Hodgson's products, cake mixes that aren't 3 or 4 times what you would pay for betty crocker.

I would like to see us request that Sprouts, Fry's and Walmart carry more of their products.
We should support the companies that go the extra mile for us. Vote with your dollars!

Also I have been in contact with Namaste foods and they say they also test their products to 5ppm. I have not sent them a letter but they have called and stated that they very much wanted to work with us in any way they can. I will forward their info when i receive it.
If you haven't tried Namaste's Spice cake mix it is delicious! I have made the carrot cake recipe and used canned pumpkin to make delicious muffins. All the health food stores carry Namaste foods and flours and mixes.

Renee has also been in contact with Pamela's Gluten free company and here is their reply.

"Good Afternoon Renee -

We appreciate your interest in Pamela's Products.  It is only through relationships with our customers that Pamela’s is able to celebrate 28 years in the natural food industry! Pamela’s passion has always been to create a food experience that will establish lasting memories for our customers!
I would tell you exactly what the FAQ says:
The new FDA regulation for standardizing gluten-free claims and labeling on products addresses a serious issue for many of our customers. At Pamela’s, we are pleased to see there are now some standards in place to help those with celiac disease and gluten intolerance make educated decisions regarding their food choices. We are happy to say that we provide gluten-free products already in compliance with new FDA requirements and have been doing so for over 28 years. While the ruling requires gluten-free labeled products must test at 20ppm or less for gluten, Pamela’s products consistently test at under 5ppm or less.
On a side note, we do not receive complaints of cross contamination.

I hope this is helpful & please do not hesitate to let us know if we can be of further assistance.
Have a great day!"

Once again we want to state that the choice is yours, we cannot tell you what is right for you, we are only here to pass on information that we receive.

On our journey to health,

Linda and Renee

May 2016 Meeting Summary

MAY IS NATIONAL CELIAC AWARENESS MONTH.

The May meeting of the Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support Group was held on Tuesday, May 10th from 12-2PM, at the Prescott Valley Public Library.

We have been among this nationally recognized group for some time now and yet there are still those out there that think eating  gluten free is a "fad" or a "trend".  It is our responsibility to "kindly" remind our friends, family, co-workers and especially restaurant staff that eating gluten free is not a choice for us, but a true medical necessity!  Every time we ingest a small amount of gluten, we set our body back and it has too struggle to neutralize the enemy we ate.  You may call it getting "nuked" or glutenized, but either way it is critical to reduce this possibility.

Labeling of gluten-free food changed when Congress approved the new labeling law in August 2014.  Food companies can now claim they are gluten free by having 20ppm (parts per million) of gluten. For many, if not all that have Celiac or Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance this is still too much gluten to ingest 3 times per day!!  At our May 10th meeting everyone received handouts of an interview with the FDA discussing whether they think the new gluten-free laws are working. Extra handouts are still available.

In keeping with this same train of thought, we discussed food companies that have dedicated gluten free facilities.  Their products will not be cross-contaminated with wheat products.  Bob's  Red Mill, Kinnickinnick, and Schaar are among a few.  If you are still having symptoms, perhaps you are eating products that have been cross-contaminated in the processing plant.  Too make matters even more complicated many of the small gluten free companies have been bought out by major mainstream corporations.  Info on that will be sent to you separately.

Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting June 14th.

April 2016 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support Group met at the Prescott Valley Public Library on tuesday, April 12th, from 12-2PM. The topic for April was "Gluten Lurking in Our Gluten Free foods".

The big name brand food industry has lobbied the FDA to allow 20ppm of gluten in our foods and still be labled GLUTEN FREE, because they wanted to cash in on the mulit-billion dollar a year gluten free food industry. They wanted to be able to manufacture our foods on shared equipment with wheat and gluten without investing the money to build a seperate dedicated gluten free facility.
The concern is that they are not at any time concerned with our health just with making money off of our medical inability to eat gluten.

Renee R. had forwarded an email from one of The Phoenix Celiac members.
In this email the writer explained how after eating products from Arrowhead Mills she had been suffering terribly with Dermatitis Herpetiformis, a form of Celiac. When she looked on the package of rice flour it said  they are certified gluten free and cannot contain more than 10ppm gluten!

Linda was shocked when she read that, as she had been using Arrowhead Mills rice flour exclusively for over a year, and was constantly sick with symptoms associated with getting glutened! Sure enough she looked on the bag and that is what it states.

So Linda called the company and found out that all of their products are manufactured in a faculity that manufactures wheat and other gluten containing grains and that the flour is manufacutred on the same lines at gluten!

The email writer also had a list of companies that are not dedicated GF facilities, so it got Linda thinking about the different gf foods in my pantry. After many phone calls it looks like at least one third of the gluten free foods that are in her home have are made on shared equipment with wheat and many have the ceritfied gluten free label!

Let's think of it this way.
If the GF product manufacturers also process wheat, they supposedly clean the lines before processing Gluten free foods. But,if they process 10 thousand bags of flour the ones at the front of the lines may have 10ppm or or more and the ones at the back of the production run may have 5ppm or none! So when you are buying that product made on shared equipment with gluten are you getting the one at the front with possible contamination, or the one at the last with no gluten?

Some of the gluten free products manufactured in a facility that also process gluten are:
Arrowhead Mills
Amy's foods
Alexia
Natures Path
Glutino
and many others.

Some of the safe dedicated gluten free manufacturers are:
Bob's Red Mill
Hodgson Mills
Kinnikinnick Foods
Freedom Foods
Schar
and others.

If you are in doubt, look online or call the company, if you have questions about your processed foods.

Also, the "Certified Gluten Free" label on the front of the package doesn't mean our foods are safe to eat.
The GFCO, Gluten Free Cetification Organization, allows manufacturers to process our foods on shared equipment with wheat, if they test out at 10ppm of gluten. But, do they recieve test samples of every batch of food these companies make, or just a sample of a particular batch of  food?

BEWARE the Gluten free label with out reading the ingredient list!
Linda C. purchased some Gourmet Jelly beans from Trader Joes that said, natural flavors, colors from fruit and vegatable sources. Linda C. looked on the back and saw GLUTEN FREE, so she purchased them and had a big handful when I got home. Within an hour she felt sick and was sick the next day also, realizing that the only new thing she had eaten was the jelly beans she read the ingredient list and it says, "Sugar, Glucose Syrup, (Corn Syrup, WHEAT SYRUP)" !!! The wheat syrup had an asterick behind it and she found the statement below the GLUTEN FREE words; Wheat syrup has been processed to allow this food to meet FDA requirements for a gluten free claim.  We can no longer trust that any one has our health and best interest at heart so, READ EVERY LABEL! And if in doubt don't eat it, call the company that made it.

March 2016 Meeting Summary

The Prescott Area Celiac and Gluten Free Support Organization met  on Tues. March 8th, 2016 from 12-2PM.

Dr. Gemie Kohler McCloud NMD, of Innate Wellness of Prescott, spoke to twenty six members of the  group at the Prescott Valley Public Library.

Her topic was "The Benefits of Food Allergy Testing As a Tool to Heal and Restore GI Function in Celiac and Those With Gluten Intolerances." Dr. Gemie did a great job explaining about the differences of wheat allergies, celiac, and gluten sensitivity/intolerances.  She presented some very informative slides with graphics on what damage to the gut looks like with each of these conditions.
She also spoke about how finding out your food allergies/intolerances by simple blood testing and then how avoiding those foods, would help heal Leaky Gut and your immune system.

It was a great presentation and the group was very grateful to Dr. Kohler McCloud for her care and concern and for taking valuable time out of her busy schedule for them.

The next meeting of the PACGFS organization will be held on Tuesday, April 12th form 12-2PM at the Prescott Valley Public Library.
